Proxy Vs Reverse Proxy- What is VPN ??

Hey !!

Want to learn what is VPN, so let's first understand what is Proxy and Reverse Proxy ??

1. What is Proxy ??

Imagine, just imagine...

You are a college student and you are not going to college today but you have to take today's attendence, so what will you do?? You will ask your friend to take your attendence on behalf of your's means you want the teacher to give you attendence without knowing if you are in class or not. You are hiding your identity but you also want the work to be done. You want the attendence from your teacher without revealing your identity and this is called Proxy....

cool...

So whenever you want request something from server and also you don't want to show your identity, you ask Proxy Server to work for you on behalf of your's and this is called Proxy

But Why to hide your identity or Why to use Proxy Server??

  • It makes you anonymous
  • It filters the bad requests which could impact your machine
  • It saves bandwidth
  • It protects the sensitive data going through the request

2. What is Reverse Proxy ??

It is exactly opposite to the Proxy Server. In Proxy, you are hiding your identity but in case of Reverse Proxy, Identity of server is kept safe.

When you sends the request, you can use the proxy server to hide your identity and thus this proxy server will send your request on your behalf to server but here the role of reverse proxy server comes, instead proxy server will able to know about the server, reverse proxy server receives that request from proxy server and then sends it to the server so that proxy server will not able to know the about the sever. So to hide the identity of server, we uses reverse proxy.

Now, again the question is Why to hide server identity or Why not to expose the server directly or Why to use the Reverse Proxy Server??

  • It helps in balancing the load among the servers
  • It reduces the request size
  • It makes the server anonymous

3. What is VPN ??

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. As we have discussed what is Proxy??, I hope now you understood it very well. VPN also hides the client identity means whenever you are using VPN and sends the request to the server, server will not able to know about you.

So, is VPN same as Proxy Server ????

Yes, a VPN is quite similar to a proxy.

But....

  • where a proxy server can only redirect web requests, a VPN connection is capable of routing and anonymising all of your network traffic
  • and there is one significant advantage of the VPN – all traffic is encrypted. This means that hackers cannot intercept data between your computer and the VPN server, so your sensitive personal information cannot be compromised.
